Spring Kings and Things

I finally got a taste of some spring kings! We made a trip out of Grand Haven last week for some hopeful hot fishing. Unfortunately for us, the fishing wasn’t too hot. It was grindy, reminiscent of a mid morning summer day post morning flurry. Well except it was cold and really windy out of the north east. Throw in the weekend boat traffic and the trip was not easy fishing. Every salmon trip, I look forward to that morning flurry.

The morning flurry on this trip left us biteless and scratching our heads. Seeing a few other fish caught just made it more painful. Definitely rusty and still new at this we weren’t adjusting fast enough. Finally we hit a fish, a coho on a high line. A few minutes later and a king was screaming only for me to knock it off with the net in the prop wash. We did end up getting some nice kings and another coho, ending 5-9ish. Things learned from this trip include, a 125 copper vs a 100 copper setup can make all the difference. The depth difference between the 2 isn’t that much but I guess it was enough. It was however good to get out for the first troll of the year and get back into the swing of things. A Dreamweaver SS Slurpee and a Stinger in Coyote were our “hot” baits. Some of these salmon went into a quick cure and then a deep freeze for eating raw this weekend.

I’ve got some power ups going on the Nitro this week. If you’ve tuned in at all over the winter, you know that I’ve been raving about the new Xplore units from Humminbird. It is time to get some of those on the water with MEGA Live 2. I am excited for an electronics refresh on the boat. I’ll be rigging that up this week and also doing some YouTube videos on how to navigate the Xplore units. I get a lot of feedback every year at the shows and questions about how to get here or there within a menu. So hopefully I’ll be answering some of those questions for people.

One other unique thing I’ve gotten involved with recently is the MUCC Field Team. If you aren’t familiar with MUCC, it stands for the Michigan United Conservation Clubs. You’ll see them working with the NRC, DNR, and legislature to represent hunter and angler interests. They also engage in a lot of different conservation projects across the state. To be honest with you, I’m not really sure what my role will be yet. But I feel like it will be an opportunity to promote conservation in Michigan and many of the things that are important to me. I’m looking forward to seeing where it goes.
