Grand Haven Fishing Report 5-11-26

We just couldn’t stay away from a Mother’s Day weather window. Still trying to get this new rig dialed and the fishing has been good. May is for sure my favorite time to troll the big lake for salmon. It would be another pull lines at 10:15 trip but we were going to make the most of it. The bibs and cold weather clothes were back out since it was in the mid 30’s. I had put them away and swore I wasn’t bringing them out again…I was wrong, but at least it was calm this time.

Our last trip out we did best to the south in 40-50 feet so we put lines down and headed there. Our last rod in was a 200 copper with a Captain Gary’s SS spoon and it went while Cameron was putting it in the rod holder. It went dead after that but we picked up another in the same area on the troll back through. That became the theme for the day. We had a stretch of water without many other boats and a few fish in it. We never experienced any fast and furious action but it was steady. Unlike last trip we did pick up some fish on higher lines but deeper still ruled for the day. Our action also pushed out to the 45-60 foot zone. We ended up 11-14 and I don’t quite remember everything that went but I’ll do my best.

I did notice less alewives in these fish when I cleaned them but I’m sure they’ll be a big batch hitting the river soon. We didn’t mix things up from all spoons but I think the next trip or 2 we will, there is always something to experiment with. We had 7 nice kings and 4 “shakers” in our mix of fish. I was not complaining about some “shakers” cooked whole for dinner though. It looks like a ton of fish have already made it north based on reports so who knows how long this great fishing is going to last. Might be a minute before I get out there again. I’ve got some pan fishing with the girls and bass fishing to do before Grand Haven tournament time.
